SPIRITUAL DIRECTION

What is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual direction is an ancient art, practiced in all of the major faith traditions, in which one person companions another on his or her spiritual journey. In spite of their name, spiritual directors are not usually very directive! They do not focus on giving advice. They concentrate instead on listening “with the ears of the heart” to another person’s story in order to help that person attend to the divine presence in his or her life.

You don’t have to be part of a particular spiritual tradition or be connected to a faith community to enter spiritual direction. Spiritual direction is for anyone who simply desires to explore the spiritual life at a deeper level.

My Call and Training as Spiritual Director

When I was ordained as a minister in 1986 I sought a spiritual director for myself, and I have stayed in spiritual direction for most of the years since. After my late husband died in 2018, I discovered that I was being called more deeply into prayer and I felt a tug to be trained as a spiritual director. The Certificate in the Art of Spiritual Direction at San Francisco Theological Seminary, which I am completing at the end of 2020, has offered an excellent foundation for me as I meet with directees. Even after my training ends, I will continue to meet with a supervisor regularly to ensure that I continue to grow and learn in my practice.
